Enter 1–3999 or letters such as MCMXCIV. No internal spaces or separators.

How to use this tool

Enter a whole number from 1 to 3999 or a Roman numeral such as XLIX. The direction is detected automatically. Read the result and its value breakdown, then copy the converted value. Try either example or use Clear to start again.

Good to know

Uses standard modern subtractive notation with I, V, X, L, C, D and M. Lowercase letters and Arabic/Persian digits are accepted. No zero, negatives, fractions, overbars, Unicode numeral glyphs or complete dates. Historical variants such as IIII are rejected; use IV. Input is not saved or uploaded.

Roman numeral values

Roman numerals combine seven letters. Usually larger values come first and values add together. The six standard subtractive pairs put a smaller value before a larger one. For example, MCMXCIV = M + CM + XC + IV = 1000 + 900 + 90 + 4 = 1994.

Roman numeral questions

How do I convert a year to Roman numerals?

Enter the year as a whole number. For example, 2026 becomes MMXXVI. The tool converts the number only, not a day/month/year date or a calendar system.

How do I read a Roman numeral?

Read standard symbols and pairs from left to right and add their values. XLIX is XL (40) plus IX (9), which equals 49.

Why are IIII and IL rejected?

This converter uses standard modern subtractive notation: IV for 4 and XLIX for 49. Historical inscriptions and clock faces may use other forms, including IIII. Those variants are outside this tool’s scope.

What are the smallest and largest supported values?

I is 1 and MMMCMXCIX is 3999. Larger values need additional conventions such as overbars, which this converter does not support.

Is there a Roman numeral for zero?

The standard I, V, X, L, C, D, M system used here has no symbol for zero. Zero, negative numbers and fractions are not supported.
